Brighton Rock

As a Brightonian the prospect of this film is almost too much for me to contain myself! Nevertheless, if you're not a citizen of my fair city, the trailer to this film looks appetising regardless.

The film is based on the novel by Graham Greene, which was made into a film by John Boulting in 1947. Both of those were set in the 1930s, but director Rowan Joffe has opted for the 1960s setting this time around, giving the film a Quadrophenia feel.

How do we think Sam Riley will do as replacement for Richard Attenborough's Pinkie?

Alex Ebert - Truth

Alex Ebert - Truth by isaidahip

This amazing, slow, almost throbbing track is from Alex Elbert, who is embarking on a solo career this year. The quivering emotions in his voice linger beautifully throughout, and he doesn't give an ounce too much too or little. The front man of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes and Ima Robot is set to release his album this year, and if the rest of it sounds anything like this I wish him the best of luck, not that he'll need it!

Rufus - We Left

Something floaty to get you through Monday afternoon.

Penny and the Quarters - You and Me

Penny and the Quarters are a 'lost' soul band and this song was recorded at sometime between 1970 and 1975. You might recognise this gorgeous song from the film Blue Valentine.

All the reviews of this feel are very positive, but they all carry the same message: this film is gut wrenching. Over 112 minutes it depicts the gradual deterioration of a relationship. Not one I'll be watching with the boy friend then...

Nails of the week

Ming vase inspired nails! Very nice indeed!

Flatforms

As I was just coming to terms with the bafflement that are wedged deserts boots: are they mad kind of genius or just plain odd? Now I'm confronted by flatforms.

Yasmin - On My Own

I haven't made my mind up with this song. It isn't massively original and the video is a little posey and try-hard at times. However, she's half Iranian, like me, and she has a tattoo of her name in Farsi on the back of her neck. And it's her first video and I imagine her budget isn't huge. So, I'm going to give her a plug anyway.
